The application of a number of specific disciplinary approaches to medicinal chemistry is all centred on the ultimate objective of drug development. The fields of medicinal chemistry include drug target discovery and validation, rational (target-based) drug design, structural biology, computational-based drug design, techniques development (chemical, biochemical, and computational), and "hit-to-lead" development. Chemical biologists, synthetic organic chemists, combinatorial (bio)chemistry, mechanistic enzymology, computational chemistry, chemical genomics, and high-throughput screening are all methodologies and approaches utilised by medicinal chemists in the search for new drugs. Medicinal chemistry is concerned with the molecular elements of drug action, such as interactions with drug targets from both the drug's and target's perspectives, the relationship between drug chemical structure and drug action, and the impact of metabolism on drug structure and hence action. The focus on computational chemistry in the realm of drug design and development distinguishes medical chemistry. This encompasses components of molecular modelling, molecular dynamics, docking, pharmacophore modelling, and QSAR as they apply to drug action and novel drug development.
